Main Objective

The project will contribute to a deep understanding of the environmental behaviour and effects of persistent pollutants (PCs), through elaboration and performing of experiments devoted to contribute to the development of quantitative relationships and models on their fate, transport and behaviour and on the remediation alternatives of environmental components affected by pollution. This project will provide research as well as information on the ways to evaluate the risks associated with the impacts induced in the environment by PCs presence in various environmental matrices and combines both analytical methods and multivariate modeling.
Based on experimental and calculated data methods for various pollutants characterization and ranking will be developed, which facilitate the risk assessment process as well as the decisional process for risk management and remediation of the environmental components affected by the contamination with persistent pollutants.

Objectives Associated with the Main Objective

  • the understanding of transport and transformation processes of PCs, which is crucial to assess the final fate and potential risk of anthropogenic substances in the environment;

  • the project will include advanced and comples researches in ordet to get information on the fate of some persistent pollutants, their environmental transport and behaviour, as well as assessment of the risks associated with the impacts induced in the environment by PCs presence in various matrix, combining analytical methods and multivariate modeling;

  • the results of this assessment will be used in the development and evaluation of remedial alternatives, establishment of a plan for remediation and for monitoring and evaluating ultimate remedy effectiveness and site restoration;

  • also, instruments, tools, technologies and practices for risk management and reduction in relation with environmental engineering and management and ecological rebuilding concerns will be investigated and ranked.

Specific Objectives

  • examine physical, chemical, and biological processes resulting in the migration of persistent pollutants through the individual environmental compartments;
  • describe chemical, physical, and biological parameters affecting the mobility of PCs in the environment;
  • describe and possibly explain observed spatial patterns and temporal trends in the fluxes, concentrations, and relative compositions of various persistent contaminants;
  • evaluate the relative importance of degradation, sediment burial, export in the atmosphere and outflow to various environmental matrices, bioavailability of PCs in soils and waters and implications for risk assessment;
  • assess environmental impacts and risks that gather, integrate, and evaluate site-specific information regarding:
    1. environmental fate and transport of contaminants;
    2. modes of action of each contaminant under evaluation (effects information);
    3. contaminant uptake by biota from the environment and subsequent movement through food webs;
    4. responses of the ecological resources under evaluation to the contaminant exposure;
  • elaborate remediation schemes, techniques, methods, models on kinetics, transport, transfer in various sorbents.

Objectives Associated with Specific Objectives

  • review information on present and historical emissions and fluxes of PCs to air, soil and water and their effect assessment;
  • complete and update existing data base of PCs possible levels in the environmental matrices;
  • prepare a set of recommendations with respect to the exposure and risk assessment for PCs;
  • review information on present integrated risk assessment and management procedures, tools, techniques, methods;
  • provide guides and handbooks for pollution prevention and control with PCs for impacts and risks minimization.

For long term, the objectives of the research of this project connected to the generation of knowledge will be extended to the transfer of knowledge in economic and social practice and finding technical and scientific solutions that sustain the social development and enhance the human wealth.
Through this component, the interdisciplinary characteristic of the project is evidenced, this including research specific to environmental engineering, environmental management, environmental science, ecology, soil science, biology, chemistry, chemical and biological processes engineering, mathematic modelling and information technology.
The objectives of the project entitled Integrated studies on the behaviour of persistent pollutants and risks associated with their presence in the environment frames within the specific program Cooperation-Environment of FP7, whose fundamental objective is related to the natural and manmade environment problematic and its resources. Through development of the knowledge within the sphere of interactions between ecosystems, human activities, climate and biosphere, new clean environmental friendly technologies may be conceived and developed.
In accordance to the sustained action within this program: Instruments and technologies for monitoring, prevention and reduction of pressures and risks for environment and health, the research accomplished in the project are concentrated not only upon the problems concerning the environment that are extended beyond the national borders, but also upon the natural resources subjected to a continuous pressure, as became more and more clear the fact that Europe needs the establishment of a sustainable relationship with the environment.
